Becoming An Apprentice Through A Book

When Obi-Wan told Anakin at the end of The Phantom Menace,”You will be a Jedi”, he had no idea the change of events that would be unleashed.

Another simple phrase that has set many events into motion came from the title of a Jeff Goins’ book, “You Are A Writer.” Telling me and all his readers that we are writers helped me start this blog and do more writing.

Becoming an Apprentice

In a previous post, 5 Reasons To Have Your Own Jedi Council, I gave five reasons we need to have our own council.

Proverbs 15:22 tells us “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed.”

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know that I often talk about Jeff Goins.

I have become one of his apprentices. I am studying under him.

I’ve attended his Tribe Conference near Nashville the last two years and will be going there again this September. I have bought all his books. I read his blog. I listen to his podcast. I joined his online course Tribe Writers.

Why? Because I relate to his message. It resonates with me. On top of all that, he’s also a Star Wars fan.

Recently he announced he wrote another book. I went and preordered it. The title for Jeff’s latest book is “Real Artists Don’t Starve.

If like me, you pre-order, Jeff’s book by 11:59 PST June 6, 2017, you’re eligible to receive three special bonuses worth more than $200.

As part of Jeff’s launch team, I was able to get an advanced copy of the book. I can tell you that it is fantastic and is changing my mindset about doing more creative work.

Real Artists Don’t Starve

Jeff breaks the book into three main sections: Mind-Set, Market, and Money.

Within each section, Jeff addresses four principles by writing a chapter on each. All 12 chapters of the book work independently of each other, but Jeff threads a message of hope throughout the whole book for those of us that want to make a difference in the world through our creativity.

With Jeff’s permission, I wanted to share with you one of the lessons from I’ve taken from the book for far.

Lesson 1: “Thriving Artist Collaborates with Others “

The stereotypic “Starving Artist” works alone. The work in their basement or cabin in the woods all by themselves slaving over their project.

Jeff contrasts this with the “Thriving Artist” who collaborates with others.

Two of my favorite authors are C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) and J. R. R. Tolkien (Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings), so when Jeff shared the story of the Inklings I was somewhat familiar with it. If you aren’t, the Inklings were a group of writers that included literary legends C.S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, among others.

With the success of the Hobbit, Tolkien was asked to write another novel. When he got stuck a few chapters in, he had lunch with Lewis. Tolkien told Lewis was he stuck. That he was done.

“The problem,” Lewis replied, “is that hobbits are only interesting when they’re in un-hobbit-like situations.”

That was all Lewis needed to say to Tolkien. The rest they say is history. Tolkien went on to write The Lord of the Rings.

Jeff continues in this chapter to flesh out the “Rule of Collaboration” by including more recent works by Beyonce and others.
