5 Things Christians Must Do

After Rey finds Luke on the planet of Ahch-To, she tries to get Luke to teach her. He refuses.

She snaps back, “I’ve seen your daily routine. You are not busy.”

While it is true that Luke is not busy, he is avoiding doing what he has been called to be, a Jedi. He was not to be a hermit. He, like the Jedi before him, was to be involved in the galaxy.

Both Jedi and Christians have been called out from the rest of the population. The church, in Greek is called the “ekklesia”. That literally means the “called out ones.”

We are called out of darkness into the light(1 Peter 2:9). We are also to be in the world but not of it (John 17:16).

While we are not to pursue the things of this world, Colossians 3:2, we are to be hard at work, Colossians 3:23.

Being lazy and slothful is not the Christian way. As believers, we are part of the ekklesia, and as such, we are called out and, God who has called us out has also called us to do certain things with our lives.

Christians Are To:

  1. Love each other
In John 13:35, Jesus said “By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.”
  2. Help the needy
In Matthew 25:34-40 shares “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
  3. Give thanks and be joyful
In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul instructs us “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
  4. Pray
Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:9-13 to “Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
  5. Share the Gospel
One of the last things Jesus told His disciples is in Matthew 28:19-20, where He commands “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Remember that we are saved by grace but also created in Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:8-10).
