Becoming More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine

Facing Darth Vader on the Death Star in A New Hope, Obi-Wan tells him “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

Vader and Obi-Wan continue to duel until Obi-Wan sees Luke. Obi-Wan pauses and then decides that in sacrificing himself, he will save Luke, Princess Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and the droids.

Obi-Wan allows Vader to strike him down. When that happens, Obi-Wan physically disappears, into the Force.

While Obi-Wan sacrificed to save Luke in the crew is noble and his transition into the living Forces is great for movie making. It pales in consideration of what Jesus did for us.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

Obi-Wan’s sacrifice led to Luke getting more help than Luke could have received if Obi-Wan was alive. Obi-Wan was no longer limited to helping Luke by his physical proximity to Luke since he was now with Luke “in spirit”.

This is not to diminish the role of the Holy Spirit, for He is no dead Jedi. But think how Obi-Wan was with Luke and we can see how the Holy Spirit is with us. We should be able to feel His presence in our lives.

Jesus promised we would receive the Holy Spirit from God. In John 16:7 Jesus tells us “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”

In 1 Corinthians 3:16 Paul tells believers “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

The Holy Spirit also washes and renews us (Titus 3:5).

If you ever have trouble praying, remember Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”

Join with Me to Spread the Gospel

This post is a modified version of a devotional from my upcoming devotional book.

As millions of kids, teens, and young adults face a world that is rapidly removing any trace of Judeo-Christian values from the culture, there is still hope to reach them.

The Gospel is for all people and throughout all time.

You can help the next generation learn about the Gospel by using Star Wars.

There are valuable lessons that can be learned from Star Wars. My devotional book looks at the live-action Star Wars movies (Episodes I to IX, Rogue One, and Solo) and pull out different lessons and take-a-ways.

If you wish to join me in using Star Wars to share the faith, please consider purchasing the daily devotion I am published in November 2019.
