Anakin is talking with Yoda about the visions he is having. While Anakin will not tell Yoda who they are about, he does admit that it is for someone close to him, and they are of pain, suffering, and death.
Yoda advises Anakin, “Careful you must be when sensing the future, Anakin. The fear of loss is a path to the dark side.”
For a Jedi, the fear of loss is a path to the dark side since the Jedi are forbidden to becoming attached to anything.
As Yoda said in TPM, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
Anakin’s fall is based on the fear of losing his mother and Padmé. He does things that he knows are questionable in attempting to avenge his mother’s death and save Padmé’s life.
Does this hold true for believers?
Do we put worldly things or relationships ahead of God?
Those that fear losing something in life can easily find themselves getting angry and doing things they would not ordinarily do.
Do we fear losing a job? A relationship? A possession? Have we done or thought of doing something questionable in order “not lose it?”
In 1 John 2:15-16, we are warned, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
The only way to avoid the fear of loss is to follow 1 Peter 5:7 and cast “all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”
When we fully submit to God, through Jesus, we can then have the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10.
