You must unlearn what you have learned

R2D2 alerts Luke to the fact that his X-Wing is sinking into the swamp. Complaining about how they will not be able to get the ship out, Yoda chastises Luke for not listening to what Yoda has been teaching him.

Luke remarks to Yoda, “Master, moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.” A frustrated Yoda jabs his walking stick into the ground and loudly proclaims to Luke, “No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.”

The way we see the world is colored by our thinking. Paul admonishes believers in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Believers need to unlearn what we have learned from the world. This is impossible apart from God.

The world teaches us that we should accumulate wealth, but Jesus asks in Mark 8:36, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”

The world teaches that we should be number one. Jesus taught in Matthew 20:16, “So the last will be first, and the first last.”

James 4:13-15 shows us worldly thinking and how to think as a believer. “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’ yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”

We need to take inventory of our thoughts today and see if they are worldly or godly.

Repent if they are worldly.

Ask God to help to see things with His eyes.
