After what may be considered the best reveal in movie history, Darth Vader tries to turn Luke to the Dark Side.
As a one-handed Luke hangs precariously on scaffolding, he is trying to deal with Vader’s claim that Vader is his father. Vader then says, “Luke. You can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Come with me. It’s the only way.”
Luke does not give into Vader offer but jumps off the scaffolding to save himself.
In Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 1:1-13, we read the accounts of Jesus being tempted (tested) by the devil after He had been fasting and in the desert for 40 days and nights.
In Matthew 4:8-9, we read about the last of the three testings. “Again, the devil took Him [Jesus] to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, ‘All these I will give You, if You will fall down and worship me.’”
Jesus refuted him by saying, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’” In fact, for each of the three testings, Satan tried to twist Scripture to get Jesus to turn, but each time Jesus used Scripture to refute the devil.
Ephesians 6:19b reminds us that “the sword of the Spirit…is the word of God.” Jesus’ use of Scripture to refute the devil is our example just as Psalm 119:11 tells us, “I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
Remember 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
The way of escape is in Scripture.
