I’m fond of saying that after God, my family comes next. I remind my kids that as much as I love them, my wife takes precedence.
This past weekend, my parents came in from out of state for a visit. My Dad and I spent an hour or so talking after everyone else had gone to bed. He told me that he really felt like he and I connected more in the last year than in all the years before. Our relationship had never been horrible, but it hadn't been fantastic either. But we did make an effort over the last year to improve it.
So maybe you're like me, maybe not. You might be a parent or a spouse. You might have a child or two or three. Regardless, you’re part of a family. It could be a dysfunctional family like the Skywalkers, a mixed family like the Brady Bunch or a "perfect" one like the Cleavers from Leave It To Beaver.
Dysfunction of the Skywalker Family
Think about the dysfunction of the Skywalker family. Anakin almost kills his wife with a Force choke. She dies during labor. Anakin's children are hidden from him. Years later he chops off his son's hand. It didn't end with Anakin and his children but we see in The Force Awakens that even his grandson is affected by the dysfunction of the Skywalker family.
The whole Star Wars universe is up in turmoil because of the Skywalker family.
My hope is that after your relationship with God, your family’s well-being is your number-one earthly priority when it comes to relationships.
