After Jar Jar Binks has taken Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to the Gungan city, they go before Boss Nass. After arranging transportation to the capital city of Theed, Qui-Gon asks what is to become of Jar Jar. He hears that Jar Jar is to be punished.
Qui-Gon then tells Boss Nass, “I saved his life. He owes me what you call a ‘life-debt.'”
Boss Nass is upset, seemingly because he wanted Jar Jar dead, but he relents and allows Jar Jar to go with the Jedi.
In the Star Wars universe, we know that Gungans and Wookies observe “life debts.” The custom is if someone saves a person’s life, then that person owes the one who had saved them something in return.
As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are also those that observe (or should observe) a life debt.
Jesus saved us through His death and resurrection. Isaiah 53:5 tells us, “He [Jesus] was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.”
Acts 2:24 adds, “God raised Him [Jesus] up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.”
Jesus lived a perfect life, died the death we should have died, and He was resurrected. He paid the ultimate penalty for our sins. In doing so, He reconciled us with God.
So as 1 Corinthians 6:20 tells us, “For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
As believers, we need to honor God with our lives.
We can never repay God for what has been done through Jesus. We need to accept His grace through faith and walk in the good works God prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).
