In TLJ, Poe Dameron charges onto the bridge to confront Vice Admiral Holdo about the apparent lack of a plan. He needs to know there is a plan or at least hope.
Holdo begins to recount that when she served under Princess Leia, “Hope is like the sun. If you only believe it when you see it…” And Poe helps her finish it by adding, “you’ll never make it through the night.”
In John 20:24-29, we read about Thomas’ reaction to hearing from the other disciples that they have seen the Lord and what happens eight days later when Thomas meets the Lord.
Thomas unfairly picks up the nickname as being “Doubting Thomas” based on his disbelief as described in verse 25 when he said, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
So when Jesus stood among them eight days later, Jesus, in verse 27 prompted Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in My side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
It is not clear from the text whether Thomas actually did or did not touch Jesus, but Thomas replied to Jesus calling Him “My Lord and My God!”
Verse 29 records Jesus’ answer to him “Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
We, like all believers and disciples since that time, are considered blessed by Jesus for we believe in His resurrection without seeing the risen Savior and Lord.
We can make it through the dark night on earth because we have hope that we will see Jesus again when He comes back.
