During their duel aboard the Death Star in A New Hope, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan pick up from where they left off in Revenge of the Sith(This was before the Kenobi series).
While the 19 or so years have not been kind to either of them, Obi-Wan has spent time learning more about the Force.
Obi-Wan tells him, “You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Moments later, he sees Luke and Leia reunited for the first time since their births and decided to sacrifice himself to save them.
It is hard not to think about Jesus saying, “You can’t win, Satan. If you crucify me, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”
Jesus is more than a Jedi Master.
He is God in the flesh, as told in Philippians 2:7-8 and John 1:14.
Both Vader and Satan were wrong about what would happen after their respective foe was killed.
Vader killed Obi-Wan thinking that was going to be the end of him. In The Empire Strikes Back, he even told the Emperor, “Obi-Wan can no longer help him [Luke].” Why could he not help? Because he was dead.
When Jesus was crucified on the cross and died, Satan rejoiced, thinking that he had won. On the third day, Jesus was raised.
Jesus had paid the penalty for sin, which Romans 6:23b tells us, “for the wages of sin is death.” Now that the debt was paid.
We should remember that Jesus had told His disciples in John 16:7, “I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”
After Jesus was crucified, dead, buried, and resurrected, He could return to the Father since His work was finished. See John 19:30.
The Holy Spirit could only come upon believers after Jesus’ redeeming work was finished. Thanks be to God that Christ’s work is finished.
