Star War Stats

To say that Star Wars has impacted the movie industry and society is an understatement.

There are 100’s of TV shows that reference Star Wars and scores of movies as well.

Even if people haven’t seen the movies (I’m married to a woman that has only watched one), they get the references.

If the following doesn’t help persuade you to use Star Wars to share your faith, I don’t know what will.

The Box Office

If you look at what the films have done over the years just in box office receipts, we can see that tens of millions of people have spent their hard earn cash to see the films in the theaters over and over again.

The Star Wars films are some of the most lucrative movies ever.

  • Star Wars: A New Hope (ANH) has taken in an inflation adjusted $1.451 Billion.
  • Empire Strikes Back (ESB) brought in $800 Million adjusted.
  • Return of the Jedi (ROTJ) brought in $766 Million.

That’s a nice $3 Billion adjusted for inflation.

When you add in the Phantom Menace at $736 Million, The Clone Wars at $435 Million, and Revenge of the Sith at $483 Million, that’s more than $4 BILLION. And remember, these numbers don’t include the merchandise.

Merchandise

Lucas was extremely wise to get the licensing rights to Star Wars. That helped him make his billions. That billions, with a capital B.

DVD Sales and rentals alone bring in $3.7 Billion. The toys that we grew up with from Kenner, Hasbro and others bring an additional $12.1 Billion. The books and video games bring in $4.7 Billion. Add in online gaming, television rights, you bring the merchandise numbers into the $27 Billion range.

So if you add the merchandise revenue numbers to the mix, you get more than $31 BILLION impact as of the beginning of 2014.

Need Help Getting Started?

For the past 10 years, I’ve been using Star Wars in various Bible studies.

Many of the Bible studies I lead for our karate classes, use Star Wars to help set the stage for the Scripture we are going to look at.
