In ROTS, Yoda is advising Anakin about Anakin’s visions of pain, suffering, and death of someone close to him in the future. Yoda warns Anakin that “The fear of loss is a path to the dark side.”
Jesus tells us in Luke 9:23, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”
We need to make a conscious effort each day to follow Christ. We are to put the cares of the world behind us and live out what Jesus said in Mark 12:30. He said we “shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Why do we fear losing something? Could it be that we think it is ours? Are the things or people we fear to lose the most somehow ours to enjoy?
Who are we to claim ownership of anything? Is not God the Creator of all things? Deuteronomy 10:14, “Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.”
Every single thing on earth belongs to God. We are His stewards.
As stewards, we should do our best to take care of what belongs to God. We are to take reasonable precautions and not become obsessed with anything.
When we become obsessed with something, and we truly fear losing it, it becomes a god to us. That becomes a dangerous path. Protecting that item or person will lead us to do things that are unhealthy and potentially sinful. We see this happen with Anakin because of his fear of losing Padmé.
When we have a healthy respect for our relationships and material objects, we can be the best stewards possible. When we become obsessed, we start down a dangerous path.
Remember, we are to cast all our cares on to God, per 1 Peter 5:7.
