As the Death Star makes its way towards the Rebel base on Yavin IV, Vader declares,
“Today will be a day long remembered. It has seen the death of Kenobi, and will soon see the end of the Rebellion.”
May 25th is a time that will be long remembered.
For Star Wars fans, May 25th will always be associated with the 1977 release of Star Wars.
I am one of them. That is until 1997.
You see, May 25th now has more significance. May 25th is the day I married my Princess.
Symbols of Remembrance
RINGS: When I look down at my left hand, I see a simple gold band that reminds me of that day. I have our initials and wedding date inscribed on the inner part of the ring.
Crosses: Are used in a number of ways. For me, I wear a gold cross around my neck as a reminder of my salvation in the finished work of Christ. This particular cross has added value to me since I was given to me by my grandmother about two years before she died. Most of the physical items she gave me over the years have been outgrown, broken, or otherwise lost. This cross reminds me of her.
Red poppies: Are used around the world to remember those that died during the Great War (WWI) and WWII).
Tombstones & Memorials: Are used not just to mark the burial plot but to remind us of the person’s life.
Ribbons: Are used to bring awareness and have us remember a variety of causes, diseases, and people groups.
There are many more examples that can be shared.
12 Stones From Joshua 4
We read about one in Joshua chapter 4.
When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’”
…When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”
~Joshua 4:1-4,6b-7 (ESV)
The stones that were picked up out of the Jordan were to help each generation of Israelites remember what God has done for them.
The human mind can easily be filled with information that overcrowds the important.
Without reminders, we can easily forget the “small” things God has done in our lives.
The daily cares of this world have overshadowed the day of my wedding. I still remember the day but many of the details are fading. I’m grateful that we have a video recording of the service and a photo album with both live and “staged” pictures. I can look back on these memorials and remember that day more clearly.
In what way are you capturing the works of God in your life?
