Use the Force, Luke.

In the attack on the Death Star in ANH, Luke is lining up his targeting computer’s cross-hair.

He looks into the targeting device, and then he hears Obi-Wan’s voice saying, “Use the Force, Luke.” He shakes it off and hears the voice a second time.

This time telling him to let go. Luke looks again into the targeting device.

Now a third time, he hears Obi-Wan’s voice admonishing him to trust him.

Luke begins to trust Obi-Wan, reaches for the control panel, and presses the button. The targeting device turns off and returns to its off position.

Then a voice comes from the planet’s moon (the one just minutes away from being destroyed) questioning Luke. “Luke, you switched off your targeting computer. What’s wrong?”

Just as Obi-Wan called Luke to do something “crazy,” there are “crazy” things that Jesus will call us to do.

Look at a few of the different things that Jesus has called his disciples to do in the Gospels.

He called Peter to get out of the boat during a storm and walk to Him in Matthew 14:22-33.

Jesus calls us to love our enemies, as we see in Matthew 5:44. “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Luke’s trust in what Obi-Wan told Luke to do helped save everyone on the Yavin moon.

We must listen to the words Jesus gave us in Matthew 28:19-20a. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” We can be part of saving our world.

Just as Obi-Wan promised Luke, “the Force will be with you, always,” we have Jesus’ promise that “behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” And Jesus’ word is true.
