After Yoda’s death in ROTJ, Luke leaves Yoda’s hut and heads back towards his X-wing. Talking to R2, Luke tells the droid that he cannot go on alone.
The Force ghost of Obi-Wan appears and tells him, “Yoda will always be with you.”
Yoda does appear to Luke again in the Last Jedi, so Obi-Wan was telling the truth here, unlike in some of his other conversations with Luke.
Scripture is not silent about us having contact with loved ones after they die. In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), we are told that the dead cannot come back to talk with the living.
In verse 26, Abraham tells him, “besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.”
Since no one can cross the chasm, we should not look to the dead for help or prayers.
1 Timothy 2:5-6 tells us, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”
When we need help or guidance or wisdom, we should follow the instructions in James 1:5-6a, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting.”
We should not consult spirits, even if we believe them to be dead family members or great men and women of faith.
We can take comfort in knowing that our Heavenly “Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
See Matthew 6:5-15 below:
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
