You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

While standing on the edge of the cliff overlooking the city, Obi-Wan announces, “Mos Eisley Spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.”

There are plenty of memes that show them looking over D.C., Congress, the White House, etc. with part of this quote.

Funny as it is, the real issue is that many people have written off cities, countries, and entire classes of people as unredeemable. The truth is, as long as there is breath in a person’s nostrils, there is still hope that they can be redeemed.

In reading Luke 19:41-44, we see Jesus approaching Jerusalem. Upon seeing the city, He weeps over it. Jesus, the Son of God, is moved to tears over how Jerusalem has behaved. He knows that it will mean the destruction of the city, which happened in 70 A.D.

All of us are wretched hives of scum and villainy that are in need of salvation (Romans 3:10-12,23 and Romans 6:23).

Like those in Mos Eisley or Jerusalem, people today probably considered themselves as “good” or at least “not that bad.”

However, Romans 3:23 informs us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” And Romans 3:10 reminds us that “There is none righteous, no, not one.”

As believers, Ephesians 2:1 reminds us that we “were dead in the trespasses and sins.”

Someone did not discount us when they share the Gospel with us, so we should not discount anyone!

In Romans 10:14, Paul asks, “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?”

How will we answer Paul’s questions?

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
