How L3-37 Squares With Scripture

The latest droid sidekick we are introduced to in Solo is Lando’s First Mate L3-37, or L3 for short. The droid’s programming gives her a feminine personality and the film makers made her Star Wars’ first social justice warrior.

At one point, Lando asks L3 “You need anything?” and L3 replies back without missing a beat, “Equal rights.”

The Bible is not about being a social justice warrior since we are all created in the image of God and should be treated with respect and dignity.

Flying in the face of first-century society’s norms, Jesus first appeared to women after His resurrection (see Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-12, and John 20:1, 11-18).

At His birth, the angels appeared to the outcaste shepherds with the news of the Messiah’s birth.
In the New Testament, there are numerous places that show that we are to treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Paul shows us in Galatians 3:25-29 “But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

Paul is not saying that there is no physical or biological difference between people, he is saying that men and women are all equal in Christ, but there are still different roles and characteristics for each.

Paul also takes down the social-political divide between slaves and the free, and between Jews and the rest of humanity.

We “are all one in Christ Jesus” so let us start living that way.

Join with Me to Spread the Gospel

This post is a modified version of a devotional from my upcoming devotional book.

As millions of kids, teens, and young adults face a world that is rapidly removing any trace of Judeo-Christian values from the culture, there is still hope to reach them.

The Gospel is for all people and throughout all time.

You can help the next generation learn about the Gospel by using Star Wars.

There are valuable lessons that can be learned from Star Wars. My devotional book looks at the live-action Star Wars movies (Episodes I to IX, Rogue One, and Solo) and pull out different lessons and take-a-ways.

If you wish to join me in using Star Wars to share the faith, please consider purchasing the daily devotion I am published in November 2019.

Could you clarify what you mean by the term “social justice warrior”? What is the difference between L3’s call for equal rights and Paul’s exhortations? Thanks!
