After Obi-Wan rescues Luke and the droids, we find them back at Obi-Wan's home with Luke declaring that his father had not fought in the war but was a pilot, a lie Uncle Owen told Luke.
When Luke asks Obi-Wan how his father died, Obi-Wan tells him a story about how "a young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. "
We later find out this was a lie, regardless of whether Obi-Wan thought it was true "from a certain point of view."
We, as believers, are supposed to live a life that reflects the hope we have in Jesus.
Jesus declared in John 14:6 that He is the Truth. To be like Jesus, we need to tell the truth. Besides, it is also clear from the 10 Commandments that we should not lie. See Exodus 20:16.
If we always tell the truth, there is no need to "swear" that we are telling the truth. We can live out Matthew 5:37 and "let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; [knowing that] anything more than this comes from evil."
What lies do we tell to protect others? Easter Bunny? Santa Claus? Tooth Fairy?
What happens to us when others find out we have been lying?
It caused conflict between Luke and Obi-Wan in ROTJ when Luke confronted him about his deception.
The damage done by a lie can be repaired, but it will take time.
Jesus reminds us in Luke 6:31, "And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them."
If we do not want to be lied to, we should not lie to others.
