Anakin has been appointed to the Jedi Council at the request of the Chancellor. Anakin is not granted the rank of Jedi Master, which upsets him greatly.
As Anakin and Obi-Wan are leaving the council chambers, Anakin begins to complaining, “What kind of nonsense is this? Put me on the Council and not make me a Master? It’s never been done in the history of the Jedi. It’s insulting.”
In an attempt to bring things into perspective, Obi-Wan tries to comfort Anakin by telling him, “Oh, calm down, Anakin. You have been given a great honor. To be on the Council at your age- It’s never happened before.”
Anakin was looking at the honor he did not receive and did not see he was given the honor of being on the Council at his age.
Jesus taught us about how we should accept honor and how to avoid putting ourselves in situations where we can be dishonored or embarrassed when He told the parable recorded in Luke 14:7-11.
Jesus told us, “not [to] sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.”
Luke 14:11 tells us that “everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
We all have dignity and worth, yet we should have a humble, servant-like attitude that reflects Jesus’ mind, as we read in Philippians 2:4-8.
