Where did you dig up that old fossil?

After Obi-Wan has left the control room aboard the Death Star to disarm the tractor beam, Han asks Luke, “Where did you dig up that old fossil?”

Offended by his lack of respect for Obi-Wan, Luke tells Han, “Ben is a great man.”

Han retorts, “Yeah, great at getting us into trouble.”

We should respect our elders and remember that Proverbs 16:31 declares that “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.”

How can we honor those that are older?

Give older adults your time and assistance. We might even visit them in assisted living homes.

For those that are not that old, we can still honor them by asking for their counsel.

In 1 Kings 12:6, “Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, ‘How do you advise me to answer this people?’”

In addition to seeking counsel as Rehoboam did, we need to follow the sound advice, unlike what the king did (1 Kings 12:8).

A dying tradition in America and most of the western world is to stand up when someone enters the room. In Leviticus 19:32, the Israelites were instructed, “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.”

We can also listen to their stories and histories, especially over a meal. They might be lonely.

What can we do TODAY to honor an older person we know?
