In TROS, we meet Rey while she is floating in the air as rocks orbit her. She chants, “Be with me,” three times and gives up in disgust, stating, “They’re not with me. Ugh.”
Rey drops to the ground as Leia approaches. The General tells her, “Be patient.”
An unbelieving Rey responds, “I’m starting to think it isn’t impossible, to hear the voices of the Jedi who came before.”
Leia tries to comfort Rey with “Nothing’s impossible.”
It seems that in her training, Rey was pushing herself to hear from the Jedi to learn from them. Rey had the sacred texts. She saved from Ahch-To. But Rey wanted more. She actually wanted to hear from the dead Jedi.
We have the sacred texts, Scripture, that have been passed down for millennia.
How many are like Rey and want to hear an audible voice?
What would it be like to hear directly from God? Will He speak in a deep voice like Darth Vader?
The two most known stories of God speaking to someone are found in Exodus 3 and 1 Kings 19.
Moses was shepherding in the mountains and saw a burning bush. In Exodus 3:4, we read, “When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!'”
The prophet Elijah has fled to the wilderness to escape Jezebel, who wants to kill him. In 1 Kings 19:1-12, we read about Elijah’s interaction with the LORD. “And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper (a still small voice- KJV).”
While we might seek an audible voice from God, we genuinely do not need it. We have His written word and His creation that calls out to us. Be still and know that He is God.
