Captain Hayle doubts that the shuttle requesting permission to board is carrying Jedi. Confident that the occupants are merely “overconfident Imperial trash,” he declares, “I’m calling their bluff. Signal them to come aboard. I want to meet these ‘Jedi.'” Although he is warned about the danger, Hayle refuses to take it seriously.
Captain Hayle allows unknown and potentially dangerous people aboard his New Republic starship because he is confident he can handle whatever happens. His confidence has crossed the line into arrogance, causing him to underestimate those coming aboard.
Rather than listening to the warning and taking reasonable precautions, Hayle mocks the visitors and treats the situation with contempt. His pride convinces him that his judgment is correct and that there is little reason to be concerned.
Hayle’s arrogance has deadly consequences. The visitors quickly overpower the security detail, kill the captain and others, and eventually destroy one of the New Republic’s newest starships. Hayle thought he was calling someone else’s bluff, but his own pride blinded him to the danger.
Scripture repeatedly warns us about pride. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall,” while Proverbs 18:12 reminds us, “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”
Captain Hayle was much like Edom. In Obadiah 1:3, the Lord GOD declared, “The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?'”
Pride deceives us because it convinces us that we know better, are stronger, or do not need anyone’s advice—including God’s. Humility recognizes that our knowledge and abilities are limited and that we desperately need God’s wisdom.
Are we willing to listen when God, Scripture, or wise believers warn us?
Or has pride convinced us that we already know best?
