After getting out of the trash compactor that Princess Leia had led the group into, Han proclaims, “If we can just avoid any more female advice, we ought to be able to get out of here.”
Han’s snarky reply to Leia shows his arrogance and sexist view of women. He did not think much of them.
This is contrary to how Jesus treated women.
Jesus showed them respect in a time when women were not seen as equals to men.
Jesus elevated women throughout Scripture. Examples include when He appeared first to the Marys, as described in Matthew 28:1-10, and when He spoke with the Samaritan woman in John 4:1-26.
In John 4:7-9, 27, we read, “A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink.’ (For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘How is it that You, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?’ (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)…Just then His disciples came back. They marveled that He was talking with a woman.”
As believers in Jesus, we are all equal. While there is still a hierarchy within the family, Paul shows us in Galatians 3:28-29, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”
How can we treat one another with respect and equality?
We can ask for advice from people based on their background and not their gender or their race.
What if we treated individuals as individuals, not as part of a larger stereotype? While some stereotypes may be more accurate than others, everyone should be treated as an individual created by God.
