In Rogue One, when Saw Gerrera imprisons Cassian, Baze, and Chirrut, Baze tells Cassian to relax, that he and Chirrut have “been in worse cages than this one.”
Cassian replies that “This is a first for me.”
Chirrut challenges Cassian’s statement by declaring, “There is more than one sort of prison Captain. I sense that you carry yours wherever you go.”
Humanity has been locked in a prison since the Fall when Adam and Eve sinned. The prison is sin. No matter where we go in life, our sin is there. There was no shaking it. It was always with us.
Then Jesus came into the world. In John 3:17, we read, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.”
What did Jesus come to save us from? Ourselves and our sins.
Romans 6:22-23 tells us that believers in Jesus “have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We are no longer trapped in an ever-present prison. We know this because in Luke 4:17-19, “And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him [Jesus]. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’”
As John 8:36 tells us, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Therefore be in Christ and be free from sin’s prison.
