In A New Hope, as the Battle of Yavin rages on, Luke makes his approach run on the Death Star. He hears the voice of Obi-Wan telling him to “Use the Force, Luke.”
Luke is hesitant at first. Finally, after hearing Obi-Wan say, “Luke, trust me.” Luke turns off his targeting computer, allowing the Force to guide his actions.
Scripture calls out to us to act like Luke.
To turn off our reliance on worldly guidance and to use spiritual guidance.
Jesus promises the Holy Spirit in John 14:26 when He proclaims, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
We are reminded in Galatians 5:16 to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Luke could perform at his best by relying on the Force, and we, too, can be at our best when we rely on the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 shows us what we will produce through the Holy Spirit: “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
How was Luke able to hear Obi-Wan’s instructions?
Luke heard Obi-Wan through the Force.
How can we hear God’s instructions for us?
We can hear God speak through His Word, the Scriptures.
We can also hear Him through our spirit and mind.
For that to happen, we must live out Romans 12:2, which tells us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
